Accessible, hospitable and authentic, Bangor just feels like home. Let our city be "Your Gateway to More of Maine."
Covering twenty-one surrounding towns and communities, the Greater Bangor Region continues to attract national attention through collaborative community efforts like Mobilize Eastern Maine, where business, economic development and tourism leaders come together to promote Greater Bangor as a preferred destination.
Located along the banks of the mighty Penobscot River, Bangor was the "Lumber Capital of the World" for much of the 19th century. So it is only fitting that Bangor is the birthplace to folklore's best known lumberjack, Paul Bunyan. Today, he oversees the day-to-day operations and construction of the new Bangor Arena and Convention Center, which is on track to be completed in fall of 2013.
Stephen King, Hannibal Hamlin and Joshua Chamberlain have all called the Greater Bangor Region home. The third-largest city in the state, Bangor is the retail, cultural, educational and service center for central, eastern and northern Maine and is a top destination for Atlantic Canada.
As the "Gateway to More of Maine," Bangor is also an ideal spot to use as a home base while exploring. Many of Maine's natural and man-made wonders (Moosehead Lake, Baxter State Park, Penobscot Narrows Observatory and Acadia National Park) are all within a two-hour drive from Bangor.
Bangor provides the unique natural resources, first-rate hospitality and cultural activities needed for a visit you'll want to repeat. We invite you to come explore everything that is new in Bangor.
