A rich economically progressive region with vibrant entertainment, high quality of life, and top young talent, the City of Melbourne is located on east central Florida's Space Coast. Melbourne is about an hour's drive south of the Kennedy Space Center, and 1-1/2 hours due east of Disney World. Melbourne has many historic sites and several museums, and is home to several Fortune 500 companies such as GE, Harris Corporation, Northrop Grumman, Rockwell Collins, Embraer as well as LiveTV.
Our signature residents have included; Jim Morrison, Vicky Hurst, Tim Wakefield, Billy Zane, and Senator Bill Nelson just to name a few. 88.5% of our residents are high school graduates, a whopping 25.7% are Bachelor's degree or higher. Melbourne is also home to the Florida Institute of Technology.
Melbourne was named in honor of its first postmaster, Cornthwaite John Hector, an Englishman who had spent much of his life in Melbourne, Australia.
The Melbourne International Airport serves Florida's Space and Treasure Coasts with domestic and international passenger and air freight service. Utilizing convenient, state-of-the-art facilities, the Melbourne International Airport is served by carriers including Delta Airlines and US Airways. The Airport also provides services including charter passenger flights, private aviation, and air freight flights.
